Termatalia started its twentieth anniversary with an opening ceremony in which the future of the fair was discussed and in which old claims were also recovered. On the one hand, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Uruguay, Remo Monzeglio, presented the candidacy of his country to become the headquarters of the next edition of Termatalia that would take place in 2023 thereby recovering the alternation of continent in the celebration of the fair that one year takes place in Ourense (official headquarters of the fair in Europe) and the following year in another country. “On behalf of my country Uruguay, President Luis Lacalle Pou and the Minister of Tourism Tabaré Viera, we formally propose Uruguay as the host of the next congress of Termatalia 2023”.

In addition to looking to the future, Termatalia also looked to the past, since in this act the old claim of the professionals of the sector of the need that thermalism is included in the portfolio of Social Services of the Social Security in Spain was spoken again. This claim was defended once again by the president of the Galician Parliament, Miguel Santalices, who indicated that the enormous therapeutic potential of the thermalism alluding that “the mineral-medicinal water cures and the thermalism will not live its maximum splendour until it is not included in the Social Security as it already happens in other countries of Europe”.

Also participated in this opening ceremony the first vice president of the Xunta de Galicia and president of the Board of Trustees of the Expourense Foundation (entity that organizes Termatalia), Francisco Conde, who explained that this fair “is the great showcase to promote the strength of the Galician thermalism”. Also participating in this opening were the President of the European Association of Cities with Thermal Heritage – EHTTA and the Provincial Council of Ourense, Manuel Baltar, who presented the 10 years of success of the Provincial Social Thermalism; the Deputy Mayor of Ourense, Armando Ojea Bouzo; the Rector Magnificent of the University of Vigo, Manuel Reigosa and the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Ourense, Gabriel Alén. The president of the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality (ICTE) and Spas of Spain, Miguel Mirones, also took part in this opening ceremony, who alluded to the problems faced by spas to cope with energy costs and to cope with the conversion to which they are forced to become more sustainable.

Uruguay is one of the countries with greater presentation in this edition, since in addition to Ourense has travelled a large delegation of institutional representatives of the Ministry and the municipalities of Salto and Paysandú where the main thermal areas of the country and entrepreneurs of the thermal sector are located, headed by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Remo Monzeglio, who were accompanied by the Ambassador of Uruguay in Spain, Ana Teresa Ayala, and the Consul of Uruguay in Galicia, Ramiro Rodríguez. The prominence of this country was even more evident after the presentation of the candidacy to host Termatalia 2023.

This opening ceremony was the starting point for two days of intense activity in a fair in which 140 exhibitors from 25 countries are participating and professional actions such as the Workshop of Tourism Recruitment which held this day the first business appointments between the 25 tour operators participating and the exhibitors of Termatalia 2022.

Mineral water is without any doubt the protagonist of today’s activities, as the XIX International Water Tasting was held, the results of which will be announced on the closing day of this edition. The seminar on natural mineral waters was also held. Related to this, the fair also offers a Water Bar with international brands from 6 countries. One of the regular exhibitors at the fair, the restaurant “O lar do Leitón” from Ourense, known for having the best mineral water menu in Galicia, once again surprised visitors with an impressive collection of exclusive waters, including a gold bottle with “Swarovski” crystals from a water brand from Kobe, Japan, worth 17,500 euros.

Mineral water was also the guiding thread of the first session of the Termatalia professional technical conferences coordinated by the Campus da Auga of the University of Vigo, which organised several round tables in which mineral water was analysed from a tourist, management, geo-historical, heritage and scientific perspective.

Within the Healthy Eating Area, live healthy cooking workshops were given today by Spanish chef Carlos Parra and conscious cooking by nutritionist Adriana Fernández Vidal. Meanwhile, Alejandro Madrigal, from Costa Rica’s Esencial gastronomy, gave a talk on healthy and sustainable eating.

During this first day, the first activities aimed at the general public were also held, as the fair invites visitors to “treat themselves to health and wellness” through activities such as yoga wellness, the coffee bar or the sound massage. In addition, visitors are having the opportunity to receive a massage both from the hands of professionals from the Shalom Centre and from the hands of future professionals who are being trained in vocational training cycles related to balneotherapy.

During this first day, 250 thermal sessions were also distributed at 1 euro, an initiative promoted by the Diputación Provincial de Ourense and which has been very well received by the public.

To all this must be added the possibility of knowing the offer in health tourism offered by the 25 countries represented in Termatalia 2022.

This opening day coincided in time and space, in Expourense, with the closing day of the International Congress of Thermal Tourism organized by EHTTA and the Diputación Provincial de Ourense under the auspices of the UNWTO.
