It will be one of the novelties of this edition and will be held in parallel and complementary to the fair between September 29 and 30
Organized by the French company “alternative.cafe”, it will bring together coffee growers from different countries in Ourense with the aim of promoting the quality of coffee roasted at origin, a product that promotes sustainability and commercial responsibility
Termatalia, the International Thermalism Fair, has been chosen as the venue for the celebration of the I the World Coffee Challenge, an event that empowers coffee producers and that will bring together coffee growers from different countries in Ourense with the objective of promoting the quality of coffee roasted at origin, a product that promotes sustainability and business ethics. It will be held in parallel and complementary to the fair on September 29 and 30, 2022.
Organized in partnership with alternative.cafe – the French start-up that advocates for a new coffee model “from the seed to the cup”. The World Coffee Challenge will bring together for 2 days the best coffee producers from South and Central America, Africa, Asia and Oceania, as part of Termatalia 2022.
The main goal of this competition is to bring closer the producer and consumer:
– on the one hand: educate consumers about coffee, have them appreciate the organoleptic qualities of coffees roasted at origin and the diversity of the coffee terroirs, have them value the transmission of experiences.
– on the other: help producers communicate and understand the expectations of the market; encourage local initiatives that promote quality and better social and environmental practices (CSR), raise awareness of the interest of geographical designations in coffee-growing territories to protect the locally processed product.
A jury of experts
Chaired by Mercedes Gonzalez Rodriguez, expert in sensory and organoleptic analysis, the jury of the World Coffee Challenge will be composed of coffee professionals (baristas, distributors…) and taste professionals (chefs, sommeliers, enlightened amateurs…). The best coffees in the world, be them Arabica or Robusta, will be rewarded at the official ceremony attended by several personalities from the region of Galicia as well as diplomats from the producing countries. Los mejores cafés del mundo, ya sean Arábica o Robusta, serán premiados en el acto oficial al que asistirán representantes institucionales de Galicia, así como diplomáticos de los países productores.
An exceptional selection of one hundred coffees:
Thanks to the combined action of the international delegates who make up the “Termatalia network” and that of the collaborators of alternative.cafe, a rigorous selection was carried out in some 30 producing countries. Nearly a hundred exceptional coffees are expected to compete for the awards that will allow them to not only be recognized in their country but that will finally open opportunities for Spanish, French and European distributions. About alternative.cafe
Quentin Rouyer founded alternative.cafe after realizing the inequity of the coffee industry: coffee growers are kept out of the value generating step, roasting. After graduating from HEC Paris, he wanted to bring them his knowledge and defend his ethical and social vision of international trade. A first in Europe, alternative.cafe works directly and in partnership with producers. All the coffees offered are grown, roasted and packaged by their producers, actors of their local economy.
